Come discover the intricacies of artificial intelligence and how we can see... using sound! The function room is on the first floor. We apologise but there is no wheelchair access.

Artificial Intelligence: Whose mind is it anyway?

Your car, your phone, even your e-mail system may already be making decisions on your behalf without your knowing. We are surrounded by intelligent things that have more of their own ‘mind’ than you'd guess. But are these the droids we’ve been looking for? Join me to discuss why many people seem to want to own a friend, or build a child, and how these types of questions are being dealt with by our government. Regulating artificial intelligence is a serious business, but you can expect the conversation to get more SciFi after some beer…

Can you see with your ears?

How do we see? With our eyes? What about blind people? Michael is fascinated by the psychology and neuroscience behind vision and vision impairment. Alongside his team, he has developed ‘The vOICe’: a device that allows blind people to ‘see’ images by using sound. If you’re curious about what it means to see, what it means to be visually impaired, or are intrigued by what seeing with sounds reveals about the brain… this talk is for you!
