Recent Facebook revelations being used to manipulate democracy will be a surprise for many, however, the roots of the problem lie in the open community intentions of the platform since its creation. Despite fears of privacy abuse and targeted advertising, the platform has revolutionised the way we share information and enables the organisation of grass-roots groups without central control to overcome challenges, from community action to wildlife monitoring.
