Data sharing and the future - threats and benefits - from using data sharing for obvious advantages in world leading biological research of the brain, to threats of data sharing on social media. Open access for personal information on numerous social platform is becoming an increasingly popular topic, but, what arguments stand for why we shouldn't abandon it just yet. Please note this event was previously advertised to have Alba Garcia talking about "what we know about the brain", but unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances she has had to withdraw.

Mysteries of Memory in the Ageing Mind

Dr Vanessa Loaiza (Lecturer)
Why do you forget some things, like where you put your glasses, but not other things, like interesting historical facts? Why is it that you can walk into a room and forget why you went there, yet at other times personal memories seem to randomly pop into mind? Why do you seem to increasingly encounter memory slips as you grow older? Is there anything that can be done to deter or even reverse those changes? During this interactive talk you will learn how memory works and learn tips for improving your memory. Please note this talk was previously advertised with Alba Garcia as a speaker.

To delete or not delete? That is the question.

Jon Chamberlain (Lecturer)
Recent Facebook revelations being used to manipulate democracy will be a surprise for many, however, the roots of the problem lie in the open community intentions of the platform since its creation. Despite fears of privacy abuse and targeted advertising, the platform has revolutionised the way we share information and enables the organisation of grass-roots groups without central control to overcome challenges, from community action to wildlife monitoring. This talk is a whistlestop tour of the highlights and lowlights of the Facebook platform and show you that it can be a force for good.
