A Natural History of Deep Time celebrates billions of years of evolution with a gallery of palaeoart: scientifically-informed artistic recreations of extinct organisms and their world. A special talk is planned for Thursday 17th May, click at bottom of page for details and tickets. The exhibition is open: Monday to Friday: 9am - 5pm, Saturday: 10am - 2pm, Sunday: Closed. This is a free event, no booking required and runs from 14th May to 28th June.

Exhibition running from 14th May until 28th June

The gallery shows the development of life from its microbial origins to the modern day, focusing on some of the most significant, spectacular and unusual species known from the fossil record. Visitors will see the bizarre communities of the Cambrian, the first land animals and plants, a myriad of dinosaurs and other fossil reptiles, and the species that shaped the modern world.

A free evening lecture on 17th May will explain how palaeoart is created: how much is based in science, and how much is whimsy and speculation? The reality of how much we know about the life appearance of fossil animals is surprising: very few components of modern paleaoart are left to unbridled imagination - click at bottom of page for tickets.

The exhibition features the art of University of Portsmouth researcher Dr. Mark Witton, a palaeoartist who works with universities, museums and media production teams around the world to produce scientifically-credible restorations of prehistoric life. His patrons include the BBC, 20th Century Fox, the Natural History Museum, and the American Museum of Natural History.

Opening times:
Monday to Friday: 9am - 5pm
Saturday: 10am - 2pm
Sunday: Closed
