Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) mean that computers can make music and art, and help us design everything from self-driving cars to video games. But can computers really be creative? Could they play and make music just like us? Join us to find out how AI decision-making can benefit us in the real world!

Creativity, AI & Novice's Music Composition

Corey Ford (PhD )
Technological advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and human-computer interaction (HCI) have led to many new opportunities for designers to support novices in writing music. For example, apps such as Garage Band use clever AI techniques to make complex aspects of writing music easier - it seems like everyone can now write music! In this talk, this notion is examined more deeply. Does AI make everyone creative? Can everyone be a composer? And what other design opportunities might we adopt to enrich music making for everyone.

"Pandemic", the Board Game: Teaching AI to Save the World

Dr. Raluca Gaina (Lecturer in Games and AI)
Modern tabletop games are often very complex: hundreds of game components, many players, social context, hidden information, uncertainty, and more. Learning to play such a game and fully grasping concepts and strategies becomes an ambitious endeavour. "Pandemic", the board game, paints a picture much like what we see in reality today: the world taken over by diseases, with players needing to collaborate to bring them under control. In this talk, I will discuss current attempts at teaching AI how to play "Pandemic", and our upcoming competition on this topic.
