Cyanotypes: Photography from the Iron Age

Alun Kirby (University of York)
Of the trillion digital photos taken in 2015, how many will be around in 170 years? The cyanotype, invented in 1842, holds a special place in the development of photography. Chemistry, history and art come together to tell the story of the beautiful 'blueprint'. Today, I use this process to make unique cameraless photographs. This talk will discuss the rise and fall (and rise?) of the cyanotype, how and why I bother, and the value of permanence.

Sonicules: Designing Drugs with Sound

Dr Radek Rudnicki (Departments of Chemistry and Electronics)
Sonicules is a live audio-visual performance which engages audiences with the process and challenges involved in the design of new anticancer drugs. The newly commissioned performance takes its creative impetus from interactions between biochemical data, interactive immersive surround sound and audio reactive visualisations. Additionally audience members can experience for themselves the powerful potential of sound to speed up the design of new drugs using a specially developed demonstrator incorporating 3D graphics and sound.
