The Living Wall: A new concept for the home of the future

Dr Gary Caldwell (School of Natural and Environmental Sciences, Newcastle University)
Q. When is a wall not a wall? A. When it’s a living, breathing, pulsing organ of your home.
We obsess over the cleanliness of our living spaces, fighting a ceaseless battle against the incursion of the natural world, be it the spider in the plughole or the yucky black mould around the shower – not forgetting that most cringe-worthy part of the home, the toilet – “Kills 99.9% of germs dead" sound familiar? We are increasingly warned that our cleanliness obsession could be contributing to the rapid rise of allergies in our society. The time has come to re-evaluate our living arrangements.

Generating electricity with our waste

Alex Godain (Natural and Environmental Sciences, Newcastle University)
Paniz Izadi (Engineering, Newcastle University)
The discovery that specific bacteria are able to interact with an electrode and produce electricity from organic compounds has recently attracted more interest due to the recycling waste cost and intensive consumption of fossil fuels and its consequences such as air pollution, global warming, and depletion of fossil fuel. This electroactive bacteria can catalyze the reduction or the oxidation of compounds in bio-electrochemical systems.
