Are you wondering what beer and Lego have to do with science? Although many people think science cannot be entertaining, we are here to explain to you how science can be creative and fun at the same time. If you are curious to know how scientists in Cardiff are using bacteria to help us cope with our daily life or building a 3D model to reproduce our skin, then you are in the right place.

Lego: From the film set to the laboratory

Dr Chris Thomas (Lecturer)
Dr Oliver Castell (Serious Brain Power Early Career Researcher and Lecturer)
Dr Sion Coulman (Senior Lecturer)
“Everything is awesome, everything is cool when you’re part of a team
Everything is awesome, when you're living out a dream.”
Everything Is AWESOME!!! lyrics ©

Come and hear Chris, Oliver and Sion talk about their efforts to use Lego® technology to build a 3D bio-printer that can print living skin cells in an arrangement that mimics our own skin. It sounds cool, it takes a lot of team work and they are living out a dream…. but bio-printing comes with numerous challenges. Some of the team will discuss the pros and cons of their work and you can decide whether everything is really awesome."

From beer to eternity.  How microorganisms are at the centre of everything

Professor Les Baillie (Professor of Microbiology)
Microorganisms are the most successful life forms on the planet,  have been around a lot longer than humans and will  be around long after we have gone.  Billions of them have adapted to live in harmony with the human body attached in a relationship which benefits both us and them. They also play a key role in producing many of the foods we eat through a process known as fermentation. I will cover the essential role that microorganisms have played in the creation of the human race and more importantly in the beer  that we drink to  cope with the modern world.
