Do you ever wonder if the clothes we wear are really that good for us?  Come and join us for a series of talks questioning how we make decisions about what we wear: from bras to buckets and everything in between!  You could also be in with a chance of winning some fantastic Pint of Science prizes with our quiz activity.

Please note: Talks will be held in a function room on the ground floor.   There is disabled access to the side of the building.  Please ask one of the stewards for directions upon arrival.

What to wear when hot, even hotter and how a bucket can help?

What should I wear when it’s hot, and what good will that bucket do me? This talk will explore how we control our body temperature, how physical activity and clothing influences body temperature control, and how we can do our best to assist our bodies, and what has been (or could be) done to help. You will also learn about the benefits of a bucket!

Are sports bras worth the price-tag?

Sports bras have been found to reduce excessive breast motion, embarrassment and barriers to engagement in physical activity. However, bras marketed and designed specifically for sports are often expensive and cumbersome, leading to a relatively low uptake. This talk details the on-going research investigating breast biomechanics and appropriate breast support.

Dressed for the Cold

Humans originated from the equatorial region and therefore our body temperature is adapted to 28°C. This is very different to the climate in Portsmouth let alone the Antarctica Research station which has recorded temperatures as low as -89°C. Building shelters and making clothing has enabled us to live and thrive in colder environments. But what clothing systems work and why? Are breathable waterproof fabrics necessary? Should we wear one layer, or multiple layers of clothes in the cold? This talk will aim to answer these questions.
