Cutting edge science and research puts our own bodies at the front line fighting for the future of our species. This set of talks will allow you to explore two key areas of research. Better understanding of our immune system will keep us healthier for longer, whilst tissue engineering for our hearts will allow repairs to be made.

My Amazing Immune System (and why it won’t be as good in 2030)

The immune system is the defence army of the body, fighting off harmful agents from both inside and out. On the inside damaged cells, or cells that lose control and reproduce to form a cancer, are dangerous. From the outside there are parasites, viruses and bacteria that cause infections. The immune system must be able to tell the difference between harmful agents that it needs to act against and “self” cells and proteins. Older immune systems lose this balance - we need to understand exactly what changes to keep our immune system (and therefore ourselves) healthy in our later years.

Cardiac Tissue Engineering: A cure of heartache in the Tinder era?

In this era of online dating heartbreak and bad lifestyle choices (yes, yes, we are looking at that cheeseburger you are eating right now!) who doesn't need a new heart?
The heart has a limited self-regenerative potential and is unable to counteract the combined effect of ageing and unhealthy lifestyle. When the heart tissue is damaged by a heart attack, millions of muscle cells die and are replaced by scar tissue that is unable to contribute to the blood pumping function.
