Electricity is an important feature of our modern lives, it keeps us warm, gets us from A to B and has revolutionised the mobile market. How we store electricity and also how it is produced are key questions for this age of technology. Tonight we present three talks to hopefully answer some of these questions, provide a little history and a glimpse at the future. Please note that this event takes place on the ground floor and is accessible for those with impaired mobility. Alcohol, hot and cold drinks will be on offer and there will cakes and snacks available.

The Secret Life of Batteries: Do you have a cuddly puppy or a snarling wolf in your pocket?

We all live with batteries in our pocket without worrying about it, yet advanced technology companies such as Samsung and Boeing have had well publicised battery fires. Should we trust batteries? How should we deal with them? In the lecture I will demonstrate how a standard cell phone can overheat dangerously. I will also show how to make a basic supercapacitor and demonstrate how to melt metal using a device charged to 1V.

Without a battery, mobile phones wouldn’t be mobile! These devices enabled the portable electronics revolution and are part of the solution to de-carbonising transport and power generation, yet people still complain about them. Different types of batteries have different problems some don't store enough energy and some of them can explode. Why do they have these problems and how are we fixing them? Travel along the timeline of battery chemistry development from frogs to today’s Li-ion batteries and beyond!
