Videogames and IQ

Athanasios Kokkinakis (IGGI, University of York)
There is a lot of hype about "brain games" that make you smarter or enhance your brain capabilities in some ways. There are also "games" which are not really fun to play but have some more serious motive behind their creation, e.g. making kids eat their vegetables. These types of games have made the field shift away from something that videogames are amazing at assessing someone's IQ and Working Memory. I will also be talking about how one of the most popular games in the world (League of Legends) can predict to a reasonable extent someone's mental abilities.

Can ants help us avoid information overload?

Dr Elva Robinson (Department of Biology, University of York)
Ants may be small, but they have an amazing ability to team up and pool their resources so they can generate collectively intelligent solutions to complex problems. The collective intelligence of an ant colony allows it to go far beyond the knowledge of its individual members. This talk will demonstrate how tiny ants boost their collective brain-power, and give you the chance to learn how to make decisions the ant-smart way.
