Life is a journey of endless forms and beautiful shapes. Come with us as we travel through time from Darwin to DNA, meet outstanding researchers who answered some of the most important questions in biology. Together we will explore the amazing processes of how our bodies develop to form the shapes that make us who we are.

Please note: this event has step free access.

From Darwin to DNA

Professor Jeremy Green (Professor of Developmental Biology)
What links Darwin, Dawkins and David Attenborough, to the DNA Double Helix, the Human Genome and Stem Cell Biotech? The answer is a field of biology that most people have never heard of: Developmental Biology. This talk will chart a brief history of the field from The Origin of Species to present day. You’ll meet Ernst Haeckel, the brilliant - but ultimately misguided - idealist polymath and Thomas Hunt Morgan, the developmental biologist who invented genetics. The talk will illustrate how the field motivates, explains and innovates in some of the most exciting stories in biological sciences.

The cosmos in a body

Dr JingJing Li (Postdoctoral Research Associate)
Have you ever wondered how complex our body is, compared to the cosmos? Have you ever wondered how simple the rules can be, if we want to build a body, with the correct height, shape, and the arrangement of organs? This is a biologist’s journey to the elegant cosmos, a complex and orderly world, in our body.
