Chronic kidney disease results in loss of kidney function, and has massive impacts in patient's lives. Unfortunately, it is often difficult to diagnose early. Here in Cardiff, we are trying to change this! We are researching cheap and easy diagnosis methods so that we can try and detect earlier. This would be revolutionary for patients, and could ultimately lead to better prognosis. This night is in association with Kidney Research UK and is accessible by wheelchair.

Kidney Disease; is the answer in the toilet?

Dr Timothy Bowen (Senior Lecturer, Cardiff University School of Medicine)
There don't tend to be any symptoms of kidney disease when it's at an early stage. This is because the body is usually able to cope with a significant reduction in kidney function.

Tim will talk about how you can “switch on” genes and how the ability to regulate this process has the potential to limit harm in kidney disease. We're now looking at whether we can exploit this as a tool for early diagnosis of kidney disease.

Keeping Kidneys Healthy

Professor Donald Fraser (Director, Wales Kidney Research Unit)
We still do not completely understand kidney disease, for example why does injury and scarring happen? It is difficult to develop and test new therapies because we have incomplete knowledge of the biology, and lack of adequate biomarkers. How can we change this? Donald is a consultant nephrologist and will talk about biomarkers which may provide some insight into kidney disease.
