Wildfires! Past, Present & Future

Margarita Tsakiridou (PhD Researcher)
Have you ever wondered when Wildfires firstly started happening? Maybe what happens to a thing when it is actually ON Fire? And did you know that Fire is sometimes absolutely necessary for a forest to survive? No, it is not a typo, it is Science! This talk will travel through time and space; we will investigate how Fire helped shape the world as we know it, why Wildfires are changing today, and how Wildfires will change further in the future now that us, humans, are shaping this world – and especially its climate.

Energy Crisis! What Energy Crisis?

Stuart Dick (PhD researcher, Geography)
We all take for granted our access to gas and electricity as we switch on our lights or heating. But where is all this energy coming from and are these sources reliable in an ever changing world? Do we really need the big six energy suppliers and what are the alternatives? This talk looks at the UKs current and future energy supply as well as innovative solutions towards energy production.

Reflections from the past: using geophysical survey to find buried archaeology

Neil Linford (Senior Geophysicist)
Whilst little visible trace of buried archaeological sites is on the surface today, geophysical techniques can now discover what lies beneath. Ever lit a bonfire to clear garden rubbish? Well this talk will show how the heat from your fire can alter the magnetic properties of the soil, potentially leaving a magnetic “finger print” in the ground that can be detected for thousands of years. Got a mobile phone and thought you knew about radio waves? Well, think again! Examples of surveys conducted by the Historic England Geophysics Team, based in Portsmouth, will help us uncover these secrets.
