In this session we will have a series of talks which are both down to earth and alien. The speakers will tell us about their research on whether there could be life on mars, whether seashells act as thermometers and how we can use carbon dating to answer important questions.
Life on Mars?
Was there, is there, or will there be life on Mars? These questions drive the ongoing exploration of the Red Planet but they also feed into fundamental questions about our civilisation. Are we alone in the Universe? Answers are hidden in the rocks on Mars.

Seashells are thermometers
More than 70% of the surface of our beautiful blue planet is covered in ocean. As atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations increase, our oceans are warming. How unusual is this? How do we find out about past ocean temperatures? The answer – seashells are thermometers.

Carbon dating and all that jazz
Gerry talks about carbon dating and maybe space physics
