Join us to hear from two experts from Aston University. Dr Virginie Grzelczyk will be exploring whether we should really fear North Korea, and Professor Urszula Clark will be examining the English obsession with how people speak and the assumptions we make about different regional accents.

Who’s Afraid of North Korea?

Dr Virginie Grzelczyk (Lecturer in International Relations at Aston University)
North Korea and its leader are often called crazy, horrible and dangerous. The state has recently completed a number of missile and nuclear tests, and its leader Kim Jong Un is supposed to be meeting with American President Donald Trump in May. Should we fear North Korea? Should we talk to them? This presentation with go back to the historic root of the Korean conflict and share some insights about what really is going on within North Korea and what we might be expecting in the near future.

Better to stay silent than speak with a Brummie accent? English accents and dialects today.

Professor Urszula Clark (Sociolinguist at Aston University)
The playwright George Bernard Shaw once said that it only takes for one Englishman to open his mouth for another to hate him. In this talk, I will explore why prejudices towards regional accents and dialects persist and why, in the face of such prejudice, we continue to engage with them.
