How do we feed 10 billion people by 2050? To sustainably increase food production in the future, we must exploit innovative approaches. Speed breeding has recently hit the headlines, whilst GM is infamous. Two scientists from the NRP will discuss how there may be scope to capture genetic diversity through GM and implement these improved traits through speed breeding.

Racing Against Time To Breed Better Crops

Sreya Ghosh (PhD student)
Is it too late to breed better crops? There are numerous ways to increase crop yield but time is of the essence. Speed breeding has been the subject of one of the most publicised papers of 2018. Sreya worked with colleagues to use speed breeding for transferring disease resistance genes quickly into multiple crops. She will speak about these interesting experiments and present the possible solutions speed breeding offers to counter some of the current challenges being faced in traditional plant breeding.

Sustainable Potatoes In The Making

Dr Marina Pais (Post-doctoral scientist)
Are you interested in sustainable agriculture and concerned about food waste? Do you think innovation can help address some of the challenges of farming and food production? Marina is a plant biologist and loves using knowledge to help solve problems. She will use potatoes as an example to discuss sustainability and more!
