A night on the future of our planet: from marine modelling that investigate phytoplankton to the robots that will comb the Ocean.

The Future Ocean

What will the ocean be like 50 years from now? Very likely it will be warmer and more acidic, but what about the effects on marine life? Come and find out what computer models are telling us about how the oceans will be altered by climate change, and what that means for us landlubbers!

Our robot eyes in the deep ocean

On 9 August 2015, Expedition CODEMAP2015 (www.codemap2015.wordpress.com) set sail from Southampton. On board the RRS James Cook, there were—for the first time in UK science history—three different robots for deep-sea exploration. They will be used to map the Whittard Canyon in the Bay of Biscay. Submarine canyons represent unique biodiversity hotspots and a good understanding of their exact shape and how they function is crucial. Given that some canyons are more than 200 m deep and can be more than 200 km long, using a fleet of robots is the only way to obtain all the necessary information.
