Humans, like any Earthly life form, depend and rely on the natural environment for many things. But are we taking nature for granted? What price is nature paying for the human race and is it all worth it? A night of deep conversation and Pint of Science goodies to be won.

A Plastic Problem

Imagine for a moment how traumatic it must be to become trapped in plastic netting or a plastic bag with no means of escape. This for some marine individuals is a horrifying reality. This interactive and engaging presentation will explore the chemistry of plastics and their awesome qualities. Consider the unique uses creatures have developed for plastics they find in their habitats. Examine how plastics affect organisms during its lengthy deterioration, including food chains and bio-accumulation.

Should we put a price on nature?

What are our coasts worth to us? Coastal waters provide us with food to eat, regulate the climate we live in, breakdown the waste we produce, and protect us from both coastal erosion and flooding. The sustainable delivery of these services, however, is under increasing pressure as a result of both human activities and climate change. This talk raises the importance of incorporating the value of services provided by nature into coastal management planning and addresses the controversial issues of whether monetary values can and should be assigned to the natural environment!
