What has science done for you lately? Join the discussion with Dr. Chris Mazur, who will talk about how science is helping us live in smarter cities, and Dr. Jimmy O’Keeffe, who knows all about the challenges and opportunities involved in helping some of the most rural populations on our planet with small sensors and big data.

Smarter, Cleaner, Better – The Cities of Tomorrow

Dr Christoph Mazur (Research Associate, Centre for Process System Engineering)
Fossil fuels are woven deep into the fabric of our daily lives. Nations depend on them to power complex energy supply networks, whilst many of their citizens depend on them for their jobs. So how can we live without them? Energy shortages, climate change and political instability are forcing us to seek alternatives, but how can we make the change without alienating workforces and damaging the economy? In his talk, Chris will look at the smart ways we can overcome these barriers to change and make our cities more sustainable.

Big data from small places

Dr Jimmy O'Keefe (Postdoctoral researcher, Imperial College London)
Big data is important; we use it to understand how key issues affect individuals, and how individuals affect key issues. Some of society’s most vulnerable people are those we know least about who typically live in very rural areas, like Sub-Saharan Africa and rural India. In these regions, collecting information is just as important as everywhere else, but comes with additional challenges. Jimmy will discuss gathering big data from small places, how cheap sensors are making this possible, and how, despite all this technology, there is still no substitute to going out and talking to people.
