Keeping crops healthy is critical to the continued production of food for humankind. Just like humans, plants require special attention when diseases attack them. Plant pathologists (aka plant doctors) manage the health of crops to keep plants healthy, happy, and productive. As plant doctors, the presenters will discuss how plant diseases work and how they are being managed to obtain healthy products.

This venue does not serve food, but attendees can show their Pint of Science email ticket confirmation for 10% off at The Burger Shop (Arch 46, Cherry Tree Walk, WR1 3BH).

Using slime to stop crop diseases

Dr Timotty Pettit (Senior Resercher in Fungal Plant Pathogens)
Outbreaks of plant disease can be devastating to crops. Nevertheless, in some cropping systems disease turns out to be far less severe than anticipated. Often this appears to be the result of natural microbial disease suppression. This talk explores how this natural process can be harnessed to sustainably improve disease management in crops.

Are crop pathogens spoilt for choice?

Dr Mary Hanson (Post Doctoral Researcher)
Microbial crop pathogens are widely distributed in the natural environment and have the potential to cause severe losses during disease outbreaks. Research into the interactions between pathogens and the agriculture/environmental interface is revealing the intricacies of these relationships. This supports sustainable agricultural practices and contributes towards future food security around the world.
