For the first night of the festival we will explore the psychology behind mate choice and online dating profiles!
How do traits like social status and physical attractiveness affect our mate choice? How does the way we betray ourselves online impact on impression formation. And how should we construct our online dating profiles to maximize our chance of success?

Does online dating really work? Can you find true love on the Internet? This talk will examine some of the research work on the psychology of constructing an factitive online dating profile, in addition to impression formation and decision making in online dating. It will also look at the psychology of online communication including features such as the disinhibition effect, online disclosure, and humour. Finally in this session Martin will also give some practical advice on how to construct a dating profile, including how to maximize our chances of success in online dating environment.

Predicting Dating Profile Attention using Big Data - The Effects of Competency and Sex

Mating research finds robust sex differences in the preference for traits like social status and physical attractiveness. How do these preferences affect real mate choice? In this talk, I’ll discuss recent findings from my lab which show how a person’s competency and sex affects the amount of attention their dating profile receives. We’ll also consider whether these findings, drawn from over 1.8 million dating site users across the globe, are consistent across cultures.
