Imaging language
Dr Fatemeh Geranmayeh
(Honorary Clinical Research Fellow at Imperial College London)
Understanding and producing language is one of the most important skills we possess as human beings. Fatemeh will talk about the complex brain networks required for language and how they develop. She will also talk about how ‘aphasia’, or the inability to understand and produce language, can occur after brain damage, and how her research using advanced brain imaging is helping our understanding of recovery from this condition.
Can magic mushrooms treat depression?
Dr David Erritzoe
(Honorary Clinical Research Fellow at Imperial College London)
After many years with little research in the field, there is now a renewed interest in the therapeutic benefits of psychedelic drugs, such as psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms. Brain imaging techniques have improved our understanding of the science behind the effects of these substances, and studies suggest psychedelics may be used in the treatment of a variety of psychiatric conditions. David will talk about the use of psilocybin and how magic mushrooms may reset the brain into normal function if given as part of a safe, controlled therapy for depression.
