On the final night of the festival we will explore the immune systems of newborns, and how harnessing this information can help prevent deaths by infection. Another talk will early cancer diagnostics, and how advances in computing and machine learning can assist in biopsies.

Join us as we close the festival with a bang, exploring the human body and the latest research being done in this area!

Fulling an Army of Cells in a New-born

Sean Holm (PhD student )
Immune responses of new-borns differ significantly to adults leaving them more susceptible to infections. Young babies are vulnerable to recurrent infections, due to an immune system not geared towards aggressive combat. However, little is known about the mechanisms that lead to these changes. Our research has highlighted a number of differences in the utilisation of fuels which effect the cells' ability to effectively fight off infection. A better understanding between metabolism and the new-borns' immune function may open up new avenues for therapies to reduce and prevent neonatal deaths.

Shining the Light on Early Cancer Diagnostics. Applications of Machine Learning Algorithms in Blood-based Liquid Biopsies

Natalia Sikora (PhD student)
Diagnosis of cancer at an early stage has been shown to improve survival, yet it still remains a clinical challenge. The term cancer encompasses over 200 diseases, each of which presents with a set of different symptoms. A number of individuals who suffer from cancer will present with vague and non-specific symptoms, waiting longer than average for a diagnosis. This creates a need for a cost effective and quick alternative to screening patients, which is less labour intensive and can be offered as a regular screening procedure.
