Humans are one of the only animals on the planet to use and control fire, for this second night we look at the science of fire! First we investigate how to stop its destructive tendencies. While a fire getting out of control in your home is bad the effects of the high temperatures on a steel structure such as a sky scraper or oil rig can be far more dramatic. In the first talk of the evening we investigate how we can protect structures should the worst happen.

Fire proof

Pietro Di Modica (Mechanical Designer and Product Development Engineer)
Dr. Pietro Di Modica will walk you through the science of fire and how to stop it: what is a fire, how does it get started, how can we stop/contain it? This and more during his talk.

Engineering inspired by nature

Dr. Alice Banks (Postdoctoral Researcher at Newcastle University)
Synthetic Biology combines Biology and Engineering allowing us to create new technology inspired by biological systems. Applications range from novel drug discovery to the production of smart materials and biosensors. We can exploit nature's building blocks to tailor these devices to meet a whole host of everyday needs.
