Collective visions and the sustainable city

Steve Hall (University Academic Fellow, School of Earth and Environment, University of Leeds)
Steve will make the case for collective over private ambition to tackle climate change in ordinary places. Climate action needs to happen everywhere, so it must be about a low carbon Lowestoft as well as a Sustainable Shanghai. How do we build these collective visions in ordinary places?

Post-growth, de-growth, green-growth

Julia Affolderbach (Lecturer in Human Geography/ Programme Director, University of Hull)
Julia will consider ideas of post-growth that address the problematic relationship between human resource consumption and the Earth’s carrying capacity. She will present proposals (new and old) of alternative economies that shift the attention from efficiency to sufficiency thinking, moving from technology focused approaches to the rethinking of lifestyles and considerations of social and spatial inequalities.

Bringing home the megawatts

Richard Lane (Chair of York Community Energy)
We have to kick the fossil fuel habit and we're sick of the 'big six' energy companies. What can we do about it? Richard will talk about the history, present and future of locally owned power and the threads that could lead us to a democratised, zero carbon energy grid.
