Have you ever wondered why we feel pain? How important is it to be able to sense pain? Can your mental health affect your perception of pain and vice versa can your pain affect your mental health? What is the impact of pain in our society?

Join us as we discover the answers to these "pain-ful" questions and get a chance to discuss in real-time with expert speakers!

Biology of pain

Dr Kirsty Bannister (Senior Lecturer in Neuroscience/Pharmacology (KCL))
Dr Bannister is a Senior Lecturer and Principal Investigator at King's College London. Her research focuses on the biological, pharmacological and anatomical basis of pain pathways and their plasticity in chronic pain states. Chronic pain affects up to 20% of the adult population and can occur in the presence or absence of any past injury or evidence of body damage. Dr Bannister will talk about the biology of pain, why pain is important, how we perceive it and how we can treat it.

Pain and mental health

Dr Amanda C de C Williams (Professor of Clinical Health Psychology (UCL))
Professor Williams is an academic and clinical psychologist at University College London and at the Pain Management Centre, National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery (University College London Hospitals). She has been active in research and clinical work in persistent pain for over 25 years. Professor Williams will talk about the connection between pain and mental health and how psychological therapy can alleviate chronic pain symptoms and improve the patients' quality of life and how this affects society.
