Rain in the Desert: a tale of human migration, climate variability and drips

Dr Mike Rogerson (Senior Lecturer - University of Hull)
Stalagmites from North Africa reveal an unprecedented record of climate change in the region, at the times of human migration across the Sahara. Why was migration so sporadic? Why did it happen when it did? I will explain how climate models told us what to look for, how geological maps told us where to look and how the answer might be held in tiny pockets of of water preserved within the crystals of stalagmites. And how Hobbits can give you the strength to carry on.

Venoms & Poisons: The Evolutionary Ecology of Attack and Defence Strategies

Phil Robinson (Reptile and Invertebrate keeper at The Deep & Co-coordinator of the BIAZA Hazardous Invertebrate Focus Group)
Venoms and poisons have a rich history of discoveries and scientific inquiry. For example, what are they? How do scientists distinguish between them? How have they developed in animals? How has this adaptation driven an evolutionary arms race? And, how can medical science use them to actually help humans? Come along and find out about this fascinating and broad subject.
