As humans we rely on our vision to explore the world around us, on a very dark night it is possible to see a candle at a distance of 30 miles

But we have built telescopes that can see to the ends of the universe. However there is more information contained in the light that these telescopes collect than simply the images they produce. So in the first talk of the evening we investigate what we can do with light we collect.

Then in the second talk we see how the technology of light production is being researched in Newcastle. More realistic reproduction of images and flexible displays are comi…

Shining a new light on new display technologies.

Tom Penfold (Lecturer in Theoretical Chemistry)
The availability of unprecedented computational resources is opening pathways to solve problems that were previously intractable due to their large scale. Here I will show our recent research aimed at designing better OLEDs (Organic Light Emitting Diodes). This new flat lighting and display technology is greener than current LEDs because they are made from light elements such as carbon and hydrogen.

Starlight and the Chemical Cosmos

Dr Nick Walker (Senior Lecturer, Newcastle University)
Twinkle, twinkle little star, How I wonder what you are. Thankfully, I can figure this out using spectroscopy. Telescopes, starlight and colour are key to understanding the chemical cosmos. We will learn how modern experiments are revealing chemical complexity in the hostile environment of space; and how they might ultimately reveal life on other planets.
