Planning habitat conservation in a dynamic world

Dr Claudia Gutierrez-Arellano (Postdoctoral Research Associate)
Recent decades have seen unprecedented biodiversity loss driven by humans’ unsustainable use of land and natural resources. Our future depends on biodiversity co-existing with large human populations. The key to do so is securing species’ habitats. We aim to develop a method to identify ‘habitat networks’ that are large and interconnected enough to support many species and be resilient to climate change and other pressures.

Using small molecules to inhibit bacterial toxins

Dr Daniel Faulke (Postdoctoral Researcher)
Bacteria are ubiquitous and essential to our existence. In certain circumstances bacteria such as Pseudomonas and Staphylococcus can become pathogenic, leading to deadly infections. These bacteria utilise distinct toxins to cause cytotoxicity, tissue damage and spread of infection. As a novel means of treatment, our group is interested in discovering compounds that can directly inhibit certain bacterial toxins.
