We do it every day without having to think about it. Language, a tool we almost take for granted, is used in our daily lives to communicate with others and interact with our environment. This event will not only look at how we communicate in our everyday lives but also what happens when we are no longer able to. This will be held in the basement and there will be Pint of Science goodies to win!

The Secret World of Young Translators

Dr Humera Iqbal (Lecturer in Psychology)
What happens when a young person migrates with their family to a new country, where no one speaks their language? Young people learn the local language rapidly and begin to translate on behalf of their families in a range of spaces including banks, doctor surgeries, schools and immigration offices. These young people, known as Child Language Brokers translate more than words. They convey cultural systems and social norms in the interpretation process. Tonight we enter their worlds, question the ethics of young people acting in this role, review recent research and explore policy on this issue.

The Social Brain

Dr Antonia Hamilton (Reader in Social Neuroscience)
In our everyday interactions with people, we watch their movements and rapidly decide how best to respond. Is that child going to knock over the water glass? Should I copy how the teacher moves her pen? Does the girl at the bar like looking at me? Social interaction is critical to our everyday lives. A better scientific theory of how we understand and respond to other people will have benefits for many fields, including, helping children who struggle with social interaction (e.g. children with autism), building better social robots to interact with people and enhancing learning by imitation.
