We all have our own stories and experiences when it comes to romantic relationships. On the last night of this year’s Pint of Science event, we will invite audacious speakers to bring about thought-provoking and insightful talks about intimacy, romance and love, factually.

Building strong foundations – love in turbulent times

Dr Veronica Lamarche (Senior Lecturer and Postgraduate Teaching Director, Department of Psychology)
Could you survive another lockdown with your loved ones? Dr Veronica Lamarche is a social-personality psychologist and senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Essex. Her research focuses on understanding how people balance trust and dependence during times of vulnerability and uncertainty in relationships. Her talk will focus on how strong relationships are an important resource in times of turbulence and uncertainty (e.g., COVID, BREXIT, conflict), and offer tips – backed by science – for maintaining strong, happy relationships in the face of adversity.

The impact of 'hookup culture' on romantic relationships

Dr Laurie James-Hawkins (Senior Lecturer, Department of Sociology, University of Essex)
Why do young adults today still have unprotected sex? The existence of the current ‘hookup culture’ means that young adults struggle to define what it means to be in a romantic relationship. Women especially often end up taking sexual risks because they perceive that their male partners can find sex easily elsewhere. This all results in a gendered double standard that leaves both women and men confused about how to navigate romance and sex.
