Manage your mood with 40 winks?

Hamish McAllister-Williams (Reader in Psychopharmacology, Newcastle University, Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist)
Bipolar disorder is a serious condition with episodes of depression and elevated mood. In this talk we will review recent studies from the Northern Centre for Mood Disorders (NCMD) on memory and attention (cognition) and how these relate to sleep in patients with bipolar disorder. New research in this field suggests that sleep problems affect every day functioning, quality of life and cognition. Getting just the right amount of sleep may be very important if you have this condition. This novel data raises important questions for future research and the care of patients.

Does your car have a name?

Dr. Nick Neave (Associate Professor at Northumbria University; Director of the Hoarding Research Group)
Anthropomorphism is the tendency to give human characteristics (feelings, personality) to inanimate objects, e.g. giving your car a name. It appears to be linked with hoarding behaviours - the urge to gather & accumulate belongings that overwhelm your house & life. I’ve shown that people who score highly on anthropomorphising, are more likely to show hoarding tendencies. Hoarding is also related to attachments – some people attach more to their belongings than to people, and so can’t bear to throw anything away. I will discuss personal and social aspects of hoarding and ways to take control.
