Microbes play a pivitol role in every day life, both in health and disease. With the increasing worry about antibiotic resistance, we have two speakers to put your minds at ease on this subject. Join us for a night of talks on how microbes affect and protect our health with fun activities and plenty of beer. This venue has disabled access.
Antibiotic Resistance: Spreading the word, not the worry
Dr. David Allison
(Reader in Pharmacy Education)
Society faces the real prospect of a future without antibiotics, as 70% of the world’s bacteria have developed resistance to them. It is estimated that by the year 2050 over 50 million people will die due to untreatable, common infections, far more than are killed by cancer. However, raising awareness of antimicrobial resistance and providing education on how to use antibiotics responsibly are two approaches we can all take to help safeguard antibiotics for the future. Tonight, David will share with us the very much global issue of antibiotic resistance.
Biofilms: why should we care?
Professor Andrew Mcbain
(Professor at The University of Manchester)
Andrew’s research at the University of Manchester focuses on how robust layers of microbial colonies in our bodies (biofilms) respond to antimicrobial treatments. He is also interested in how interactions between our bodies and colonising microorganisms may support health and drive disease. His work has made him highly sought-after in the field. We are thrilled to have him speak for you tonight.
