Do you work with a dementor? No matter how good a mood you arrive in, or whatever you try, there is someone who you can never please? Alex shows us how to handle negative work environments. Following her is Jonathan, who will discuss how ions have shaped today's society, from providing forensic evidence to healthcare technologies.

Dealing with Dementors: Handling Negative Workplaces

Professor Alexandra Gerbasi (Professor of Organisational Behaviour & Director of the Centre for Leadership and Decision-Making)
While there is growing recognition about the role of informal networks in organizations and the importance of energizers in the workplace, chances are that managers and organizations are missing a potentially devastating expense: de-energizers. Over the past decade I’ve studied the effects of negative or de-energizing ties, defined as enduring, recurring set of negative judgments, feelings, and behavioral intentions towards another person. While de-energizing ties may represent a relatively small proportion of ties, they have a disproportionately potent effect on individuals.

Crime, Cancer and Chips

Professor Jonathan England (Professor of Ion Implantation, University of Surrey)
Ions - charged particles - can be placed very precisely into objects; ion implantation enables the manufacture of semiconductor chips that drive today’s information age and proton therapy directs ions into the human body to selectively kill cancer tumours. The ways that ions interact with artefacts can be used to answer questions such as, “Who shot that gun?” “Is that finger print from a drug taker?” “Did Leonardo paint that picture?” “What were the colours of those medieval windows?”

This talk will describe how ions have shaped today’s society
