Kidney Research UK presents a night exploring the complex world of the urinary system. We will be exploring how the kidney functions in health and disease and how bladder disease can cause facial deformities.

Seeing bladder disease in the face

Dr Neil Roberts (Research Fellow)
40 years ago in the Medellin countryside, Columbia, a paediatrician noticed some of the children who came to him with kidney infection could not smile or form normal facial expressions. He named this disease urofacial syndrome. Having worked on this syndrome for nearly a decade our group of researchers in Manchester have discovered why the children's bladders were dysfunctional. These findings have had profound implications for people affected by the disease and the field of regenerative medicine. Although we are beginning to uncover a previously unknown biology much is still to be discovered.
