Our bodies go through many changes as we grow older, including a heightened risk of illness. However, getting older need not mean we are less able to live happy, healthy lives. Tonight, local scientists will share some of the latest advances in ageing research. These include how simple lifestyle changes may allow us to extend our healthy years, ward off disease and live happier lives.

Stress and Our Ageing Body

Professor Anna Whittaker (Professor in Behavioural Medicine at the University of Birmingham)
Ageing has a range of effects on the body, and stress can worsen these effects further. I will present some of the evidence of how stress gets inside the body and contributes to our health, particularly as we age, as well as discuss some of the potential things we can do to lessen its effects, briefly focusing on social support and physical activity.

Nutrition, Activity and Our Ageing Body

Professor Janice Thompson (Professor of Public Health Nutrition and Exercise at the University of Birmingham)
Ageing has a range of effects on the body, with nutrition and physical activity playing key roles in how quickly and how well we age. I will present evidence of how nutrition and physical activity interact to impact on our ability to “age well” and challenge some existing myths around nutrition and ageing.
