How humans are changing the Earth - myths, law, and the future
Professor Duncan French
(Professor of International Law)
Professor Louis Kotzé
(Professor of Law)
The Anthropocene is the term proposed by geologists to signify the most recent period in Earth’s geological history; a time characterised by unprecedented high levels of biodiversity loss, species extinction, climate change, sea level rise and human suffering. Humans have become destructive geological agents, capable of changing the Earth and its natural systems in ways equal to volcanoes and meteorites, and we are engineering the demise of all life of Earth, our own included. In this talk, we will elaborate what the Anthropocene is and why it is important for law and environmental protection.
What's so bad about politics?
Bradley Allsop
(PhD Researcher)
Brexit, Trump, Corbyn and Farage - it's been a rollercoaster ride over the last few years in world politics. Over the last few decades evidence suggests our engagement with traditional political institutions has rapidly declined, and that our trust in politicians and parties is low. At this talk, PhD researcher Bradley Allsop will be diving into exactly how our relationship with politics has changed over the years, what some of the causes of this might be and how this might be reflected in recent political events.
