Supermassive Black Holes: The Hearts of Galaxies

Everyone has heard of black hole, but what exactly is one and why do they matter? In this talk I explain what a black hole is, before going on to deal with the more extreme supermassive variety, which are more than a million times heavier than the sun and reside at the centre of galaxies. I explain how these objects can, despite not emitting light, paradoxically power some of the brightest objects in the universe known as quasars.
