Find out how the properties of different particles give them the ability to be more or less harmful. Tonight we will learn how to make environmentally friendly refridgerators and how to protect ourselves from air pollution in big cities. Let's make the environment our friend using science!
Disordered materials and green refrigeration
Dr Anthony Phillips
(Reader in Physics and Chemistry of Materials)
The molecules in a solid material can pack together either neatly or randomly. How does this affect the material's behaviour, and how can we use this effect to make environmentally friendly refrigerators?
Air pollution and me
Dr Abigail Whitehouse
(Academic Clinical Lecturer and Paediatric Registrar)
Air pollution is being touted as one of the biggest health threats to humans. Recent studies show about dangerous, chemical compounds, these tiny atoms with huge impact on our organism and immune system. In particular London is one of the most polluted cities. But does it all really matter that much? Does it really affect our health and wellbeing? And if it does, what can we do about it? Those potentially most at risk are the most vulnerable in society and so actually – is it time to step up and start asking for a change?!
