Ocean plastics, computerised yeast, and three truths about science

Tobias von der Haar (Reader in Systems Biology)
Pollution problems caused by a flood of plastic waste are a hot topic in the public mind, widely discussed both in the press and the scientific literature. My own lab works on the understanding of biosynthetic processes in a biological model organism, baker’s yeast. I will present the scientific journey that recently led us to bring these two very different problems together, and in so doing, examine some basic tenets of the natural sciences: the role of truth, the nature of understanding, and the emergence of impact from curiosity driven science.

Clean air matters - a quiztalk about poison gas and deadly dust

Ashley Mills (Research Associate)
We all know air pollution is bad for our health, but what can be done about it? Test your knowledge in this talk disguised as a pub quiz:
you'll not only take home the facts and solutions around air pollution but you'll get to pit your wits against your mates on popular culture questions shoe-horned into the quiz via their tenuous links to air pollution.
