The search for deterministic answers led humankind to progress. Let's see how underlying mathematics helped and is helping in that quest. We have two sessions, one in which speakers will demonstrate how social information  influences in decision making and another where chaos is  explained.

Can you defeat the pub quiz crowd?

Anna Sigalou (PhD Student)
Dr. Valentin Lecheval (Postdoctoral Research Fellow)
A useful framework to better understand online collective intelligence is the Wisdom of the Crowd. It's is the collective opinion of a group of individuals, rather than that of a single expert. In many cases, it appears that groups make better decisions than the individuals alone. But what are the conditions for Wisdom of the Crowd to take place? Is it still valid when the questions are too vague, or too hard, or even when social influence comes into play? Thanks to a Pint of Science pub quiz, we will illustrate the general principles of the Wisdom of the Crowd and question its limits.

Chaos!

Prof. Alastair Rucklidge (Professor)
Chaos is the mythological void state preceding the creation of the universe in Greek creation mythology. I will give a brief demonstration of chaos (in the modern sense of the word), visualised using a double pendulum.
