Climate change is THE challenge of our generation and one of the biggest threats the human race has ever faced. We need to reduce our carbon emissions and  renewable energy is full of promise. Renewables are often promoted as the "Green" solution to our fossil fuel driven lifestyles. but is isn't all sunshine and wind-power, often the environmental impact of renewable energy technology is great. This evening two leading renewable energy experts discuss some of the important questions surrounding the emotive subject of renewable energy.

Green Energy?

Jane Carrick (PhD researcher examining ways to improve participatory environmental decision-making)
Deployment of renewable energy is generally considered an example of ‘green’ policy, but my talk will consider tensions between renewable energy policies and the range of objections to specific renewable energy proposals on environmental grounds.

Balance of power - renewable generation and flexibility

Dr Neal Wade (Lecturer in power systems at Newcastle University)
The UK is well on the way to reduce our carbon emissions by 80% by 2050 as required by the Climate Change Act. Some say that we've got as far as we have by doing the easy things.. This talk will show the impact of the increase in renewable generation on the energy mix. Further emissions reduction will present challenges and opportunities for the UK energy system.
