For thousands of years we have relied on burning fossil fuels to generate energy, but in today’s world, where climate change is one of the greatest threats ever faced, we must find alternative sources. This evening, join us and two leading experts to explore recent developments in renewable energy and find out how we can save our planet by energising the world.

Pint of Science goodies to be won during the night!

Sound and light: energy all around us…

Professor Joe Briscoe (Lecturer in Functional Materials)
Energy is all around us in a myriad of forms. But how much of that energy is actually available to ‘harvest’, and how much can we access and convert into useful forms (i.e. electricity)? This talk will focus on two readily available sources of energy - light and sound, or vibration - and the methods that we are developing to harvest that energy including new solar (photovoltaic) technologies that aim to be cheap, light and flexible, and kinetic energy harvesting using materials called piezoelectrics. Finally, we will see how these effects can be combined with surprising results…

From biowastes to battery electrodes

Servann Herou (Postdoctoral Researcher)
@titiricigroup
When you switch on your smartphone to check your Instagram, do you consider the amount of energy it took to produce your phone, its battery, the electricity used to power it, and the network that it connects to? Do you think about your consumption’s implications on global warming? And what about all of the different countries that our gadgets are pulling resources from? Come and hear about what this group of cutting-edge researchers at Imperial College are doing to develop batteries and supercapacitors using organic byproducts -- so that one day you’ll know that your last Insta was so #worthit
