Society faces many challenges. We know this to be true, from unequal representation to our unsustainable environmental practices. To tackle some of these key issues, we host Dr. Katrina Morgan to discuss how to achieve a more equal and diverse landscape for women in science; followed by award-winning craft beer producer and zero-waste advocates, Toast Ale.

Women Impacting Society through Science

Dr Katrina Morgan (Research Fellow, ORC)
Katrina’s talk will be on women in science, the impact they have on society, the challenges they face and what everyone can do to achieve a more diverse and equal landscape for future generations. Katrina will highlight the amazing work of scientists such as Mae Jemison, NASA astronaut, and Jane Goodall, one of the world’s biggest chimpanzee experts. She will discuss the challenges that face women in science, from aggressive work cultures to a lack of female role models. Finally, she will show how the UK compares to other countries worldwide and see what we can learn from them.

Toast Ale: Producing beer - reducing food waste

Toast Ale Ltd. (Award-winning craft beer based in London, brewed by master brewers in Yorkshire. They also collaborate with craft breweries all over the UK.)
Nearly half (44%) of bread produced in the UK is thrown away contributing to about 15 million tons of food waste. Toast Ale, founded in 2015, created a global movement using beer to tackle this food epidemic. A representative from ‘Team Toast’ will discuss how and why they were able to turn unsold bread from local sandwich makers and bakeries into a popular craft ale. With all profits going to the charity Feedback, which aims to halve food waste by 2025, Toast Ale and other grassroots movements who support our communities, might just be the best thing since...well, sliced bread.
