This series kicks off with an atomic view that takes one beyond anything that may be seen with a light microscope and then continues to burrow deep into understanding the Earth's core.

Please note that this event takes places on the first floor and is not accessible for those with impaired mobility.

The atomic gramophone (and other stories of seeing at the smallest scale)

Modern technology, from mobile phones to Mars landers, relies on electronic devices so small that not only can they not be seen with the naked eye, but they are also beyond the resolution of any light microscope. This requires us to view and produce images of materials on extremely-minute length scales. The development of tools, such as the atomic force microscope, allow us to access these extremely small scales.

The Hot and Violent Universe

Looking at the Universe "in a different light", literally, has the potential to uncover some of the most extreme phenomena in nature. When we look up at the night sky, we see a pretty intoxicating sight; but if we could see with "X-ray eyes", we'd see something rather more psychedelic, and technology from within the last century has allowed us to do precisely this. We'll hear how studying X-rays from the cosmos has helped us understand the most tightly-packed regions of our Universe (e.g., black holes) as well as structures stretching across the vastest swathes of space.

Journey to the Centre of the Earth

Direct observations of Earth’s interior are limited to shallow depths. Pits and boreholes are pinpricks into its 6371km deep core. Minerals brought to the surface by churning tectonic plates or deep volcanism of diamond-bearing kimberlites, provide some clues; however, the deepest level that diamonds are thought to form is only 1/10th of the way to the core. Extreme conditions of Earth’s centre can be replicated in the lab. Will these experiments assure us that we are walking on solid ground?
