Join #Pint16 Teesside on a journey from the oceans to the stars as Phil Philo and John McCue explore navigation, charting, astronomy and more! We discuss the second voyage of Middlesbrough’s greatest son, James Cook, and the science behind his travels. We will also travel in time, from satellite navigation all the way to the beginnings of latitude and longitude in a science-filled evening with lots of free goodies!

Oceans (not pints!) of Science 1768-80

Phil Philo (Senior Curator, The Dorman Museum)
On his second great voyage Cook famously wrote that he thought that he had gone ‘Farther than any man…’ and nowhere was that more true than in the realms of science. Exploration, navigation, charting, astronomy, mathematics, horology, health, hygiene & nutrition, natural sciences, botany, anthropology….the list of fields covered by the great man and his fellow voyagers just goes on. Discover the scientific highlights (and lowlights!) of the travels of Middlesbrough’s greatest son.

Finding your way on a sea journey

John McCue (Founder Cleveland and Darlington Astronomical Society)
Latitude and longitude, and how they were found in ages past - makes you feel relieved we have satnav!
