Our understanding of security and counter-terrorism is often limited to a very militarised and institutional understanding of the subject matter reflected mainly by the media. But the causes and effects go beyond guns and hard power. Tonight's talks will engage with public responses to terrorism; and discuss how we can make the environment around us safe in light of ignorance or hushed up information, particularly in the context of recent events.

Security and Solidarity in the “European Migration Crisis”
Dr Leonie Ansems de Vries
(Lecturer in International Relations)
People seeking refuge in Europe often experience tough conditions not only in the places they flee but also along their long journeys and upon arrival in Europe. Yet, these people have increasingly come to be described as either security threats within a wider “European migration crisis”, or alternatively as passive victims in need of protection. This talk challenges these approaches, as well as the terms involved – such as ‘crisis’, ‘border’, ‘migrant’ – by drawing attention to the importance of solidarity.
Public responses to terrorism
Dr Brooke Rogers
(Reader in Risk and Terror)
How do communities deal with terrorism? how should the threat of, and acts of, terror be communicated? Public perception and response to terror is critical to countering the aims of so-called terrorists.
