Coping copepods- The changing Arctic food web

Holly Jenkins (PhD research student, Department of Ocean and Earth Sciences)
While you’re enjoying cod and chips, I’m sure you give little thought to the tasty critters that the fish itself enjoyed throughout its life. But globally these organisms, called copepods, outnumber the insects – and in the Arctic just three species of copepod make up most of the living animal matter. The Arctic is the fastest changing environment on the planet, so how is the food web changing? And how will this affect copepods? This talk explains what is being done to find out!

Modelling the Arctic Ocean

Stephen Kelly (PhD research student, Department of Ocean and Earth Sciences)
Measuring the Arctic Ocean directly is difficult due to sea ice and the harsh environment, so computer models play an important role in helping us understand how it behaves. In this talk, I’ll give an overview of what we know about the ocean circulation, how the Arctic will change in the future, and how ocean models can help answer ‘real-life’ questions like “what if there’s an oil spill in the Arctic?”
