Although we don't see the sun very often in Glasgow, there is a great team studying the sun and the universe! Come along and check out some incredible discoveries that are being carried out here, some of them related to, wait for it, dinosaurs! If you are curious and want to discover what’s up in outer space, then this is your night.

We will end this amazing night with a Science Pub Quiz where you can test all the knowledge you've acquired!

Did a Solar Superflare Kill the Dinosaurs?

Dr Hugh Hudson (Honorary Research Fellow)
Explosions in the Sun’s atmosphere can affect our environment on Earth. So, could more extreme events have killed off dinosaurs in the distant past? Or could extreme events on other stars affect the habitability of their planets? Dr Hugh Hudson will discuss two recent observations (radioisotopes tracers in tree rings, and superflares detected by NASA’s Kepler satellite) that provide insight into these questions.

Planet 9?

Graham Kerr (PhD Researcher)
The Solar System used to be known to have 9 planets. Then they were 8. Now some say there are nine after all! Graham will give you a whistle stop tour of the Solar System, telling you about the discovery of Pluto, its demotion many decades later, and the science that helped to theorize the new planet 9.

Travelling Faster Than the Speed of Light

Antonio Martin Herrera (PhD Researcher)
Most things in the universe can be studied using light. But what about parts of the universe that we cannot see? In the case of dark matter, you can refer to gravitational waves! Antonio will describe how his research tries to describe a way to discriminate different types of dark matter using the gravitational effects that could even create the effect of travelling faster than light!
